How to access Farming in Protected Landscapes funds for farmers and land managers in the Tamar Valley AONB

Farmers and land managers in the Tamar Valley AONB are invited to join the Tamar Valley AONB team and colleagues for a pasty lunch at one of two free events later this month, to learn more about how to access grants through the Farming in Protected Landscapes programme.

The new programme formally opened for applications on 1 July 2021 and interest is already high. It has been developed by Defra with the support of a group of AONB and National Park staff from across the country, following its announcement as part of the Agricultural Transition Plan.

Applicants are being encouraged to submit plans that will improve their farms or land holdings for the benefit of the natural environment, cultural heritage and public access on their land. £300,000 is available this year alone in the Tamar Valley. A further £410,000 is available over the next two years.

The programme will provide funding for one-off projects which allow farmers and land managers in protected landscapes to:

• Support nature recovery – such as increasing habitats to improve biodiversity or greater connectivity between habitats
• Mitigate the impacts of climate change – such as reducing flood risk or storing more carbon
• Provide opportunities for people to discover, enjoy and understand the landscape and its cultural heritage
• Support nature-friendly and sustainable farm businesses.

Projects could include creating ponds or other wetlands to support a variety of wildlife; woodland and hedgerow planting or improvement; conserving historic features on a farm, such as lime kilns or mining heritage; improving access; or even action to reduce carbon emissions or use of plastics on farms.

The events will be an opportunity to hear about the programme details, discuss the best way to apply for funding and the support available, and the sorts of successful farm improvements already happening in the Tamar Valley.
