Ashburton Antiques Trail welcomes new businesses

This year has seen the launch of Ashburton Antiques Trail and 6 months on it is proving to be a huge success with the opening of two new shops.

Recently described by The Telegraph as “Devon’s best destination for antiques shopping”, Ashburton’s antique traders have been working hard to put Ashburton on the map. Proving that 12 heads are better than 1, they have come together to promote this unique town to a wider audience and their efforts are starting to pay off.

Antiques Trail member ‘Franklin and Hare’, a family run business who share a passionfor interiors and antiques, have taken the opportunity to expand their business by moving across town into larger premises. Richard Rice and wife Hannah have breathed new life into the former Lloyds Bank building on East Street. They have retained many of the beautiful original features including the large safe and Rich says “we feel it suits our stock perfectly”. The new premises opened in February and is definitely a must visit.

This month has also seen a brand new business join the Antiques Trail on North Street. Catherine Waters Antiques has relocated from Tetbury to bring her own touch of Cotswold Chic to Dartmoor. Specialising in simple, honest antiques with interesting textiles woven in. With help from husband Dan, they personally source products from all over the country and Europe. After opening her doors for the first time, Catherine said “The response has been overwhelming. I couldn’t have asked for a warmer welcome.”

The other independent shops, cafes and businesses have also been enjoying the extra footfall brought in through the Antiques Trail.Sean Wilson says “There has been a great deal of positive feedback at Chamber of Trade meetings regarding the Antiques Trail with many traders seeing a positive impact on footfall and custom. With increasing uncertainty in the wider world and high streets everywhere in decline it is important for businesses to work together to come up with innovative ways to promote Ashburton as the unique destination it is”

The town and it’s traders are now gearing up for a busy summer season, ready to welcome visitors from all over the UK and abroad who have come to discover this town’s unique charm.
