Defence again lightning: With the recent thunderstorms, we have once again seen computer equipment being damaged or destroyed by an electrical surge. A surge-protector is one good way to prevent this kind of damage, although it is a good idea to buy one with ‘telephone line protection’ - a standard surge-protector just shields devices from surges on your electrical system, and not those that come in via the telephone line to your router, and then pass along the line to your connected equipment. However, it is worth noting that most surge protectors work via a ‘fuse’ affair – so they protect you for one hit, and then they need to be replaced to ensure ongoing cover.

Shield yourself against Ransomware: Big in the news at the moment are those ‘Ransomware’ threats which encrypt your data, and hold it hostage until you cough up the ransom – usually around £400. But what can YOU do to protect yourself again this, and other similar threats?

• Use a reputable, up-to-date antivirus. This is VERY important. If you use the internet at all, you should have some cover. There is a basic antivirus included with Windows 10, however we would always recommend installing a specifically designed security software, such as Norton Security. Make sure it is renewed, and up-to-date.
• Be suspicious of seemingly random emails, especially those with links or attachments. If you suddenly get an email from a friend, which seems quite out of the ordinary – perhaps the spelling or grammar isn’t correct, or they have just sent you a link or attachment – DO NOT open it! Or at least check with them first!
• Back up your data. I cannot stress this enough, back things up. However having all your data on an external drive or USB stick won’t prevent your data being encrypted, unless the device is unplugged at the time you get the infection. So do a backup, then unplug your backup drive until the next time you need it.
