Father Christmas: GIVER OF GIFTS AND JOY AT CHRISTMAS TIME

by

Why did you become Father Christmas?

As a little boy I dreamt of one day being able to bring joy to the world as my Grandfather Christmas had done before me; seeing the smiles on children’s faces when they open their sparkly new toys on Christmas Day makes it all the more special. Also, I love mince pies, and Christmas trees, and twinkly lights, and reindeer, and snow…..

How much training is involved, what qualifications do you need?

I spent many years learning how to fly a magical sleigh, wrapping gifts and tasting mince pies at the Secret North Pole FC University. There, taught by experts in the festive field, I learnt my trade, and years later I qualified as an official Father Christmas and was given an official red suit with matching fur trimmed hat and bells for the sleigh, as a graduation gift.

How long have you been Father Christmas?

Oh goodness me, ho, ho, ho, an old man like me couldn’t give away a secret like that! Mary Claus would chuckle if you all knew my real age.

Where do you work?

Well for 364 days of the year I work in the North Pole, planning the special day, and watching over the children of the world. On Christmas Eve I am rushed off my feet, flying high in the sky with my reindeers delivering presents to all the good boys and girls around the globe. I sleep all day on Boxing Day.

Who else works with you?

I work with a dedicated team of elves who are incredibly knowledgeable in the fields of present manufacture and present wrapping. I am also very lucky to be supported by my fantastic wife, Mrs Claus - she is really the brains behind the whole operation and I couldn’t do it without her.

How does your day usually unfold?

I always begin my day with a warm bowl of cinnamon porridge. Then I put on my big furry boots and say hello to the reindeer; we’ve been through a few tight scrapes in our time. Rudolph is always the first to greet me, and he always looks so cheery with his bright red nose! Then I take the reindeer for a spin, tinker with the sleigh, check on the elves and get back in time for dinner with Mrs Claus and some Christmas repeats on TV. I love Wallace and Gromit.

What would you say to someone thinking of this career?

I would tell them to follow their dreams! You must make sure you have suitable skills such as being able to eat a lot of mince pies and drink a lot of brandy. You must also look good in red outfits - that’s crucial. Oh, and you have to be able to grow a fabulous beard.

What is the best thing about your job?

Making dreams come true - and lots of mince pies of course!
