Trade Secrets - Bow Garden & Aquatic Centre

Where are you based and how long have you been in business?

Our family have been growing in Devon since 1411. Bow Garden & Aquatic Centre was established in 1984 and we took it over eight years ago. We have always had a passion for plants and fish keeping, and our business is a great way to combine both.

We are based half way between Okehampton and Crediton, just outside Bow.

What plants do you sell?

We offer a wide range of quality plants that are largely sourced from local growers. We have lots of bedding plants, a fantastic range of trees, shrubs, alpines, soft fruit, vegetable plants and herbs.

When did you start catering for pond owners?

Bow has been synonymous with ponds since our foundation, and we have lots of pond plants helping to attract wildlife, plus Japanese and classic Koi, and plenty of pond fish. We offer friendly, expert advice on setting up a pond – ask us, it’s easier than you might think.

Do you supply fish for indoor aquariums as well as outdoor ponds?

We have tanks full of tropical, coldwater fish, and a range of marine fish and corals. Fish-keeping reduces stress and lowers blood pressure; it’s also a great hobby for kids. We have lots of aquariums, plus friendly advice on how to set one up - pop in and speak to us.

Have you noticed any changes in customer demand since the beginning of the pandemic?

Customers are looking to get the most from their outside space. Adding a garden building or patio area for entertaining with BBQs, fire pits and garden furniture has become more popular.

Whats the most challenging aspect of running a garden centre?

We are an independent family business, and like other businesses Covid was difficult, putting pressure on the supply of goods, but we were very grateful for the support of our fantastic customers.

What do you enjoy most about your business?

We enjoy helping our customers create their perfect garden. We love nature, and being around plants and fish is wonderful for well-being. Our team are great to work with, and we like to always offer a friendly service.

What sets you apart from other garden centres?

We like to be different to chains, and offer friendly, expert advice gardening or aquatic. Our Waterside cafe is also in a lovely location, next to a giant koi pond, and a stream running alongside it, so it’s a very relaxing, with great food too.

Do you have any plans for the future?

We always keep customer service at the heart of what we offer, and will continue to offer friendly, expert advice in a way that adds value to our customer’s garden, pond or aquarium project.
