Fudge and jelly beans to benefit conservation

From the 24th March 2018 visitors to Buckland Abbey, Devon will find a fresh new look to its shop.

Buckland Abbey Shop has had a long awaited refit – the first in 30 years! And we are having a grand opening event on Saturday 24th March.

As a conservation and access charity we rely on membership fees, donations, legacies, and revenue raised from our shops and catering outlets to fund our vital conservation work. The shop at Buckland Abbey is no exception!  Every penny it raises is used to fund vital conservation work. However, after sterling work for many years, it was time for a change and its fresh new look will offer our visitors a fabulous new shopping experience where they can be sure that every purchase helps us to look after Buckland Abbey.

All of the profits from visitors’ purchases go back into looking after this special place in lots of different ways. For instance:

It takes nearly 300 packets of clotted cream fudge to buy our rangers a new chainsaw to help with woodland management.

It takes 1500 triple packs of biscuits annually to provide the outdoors team with their Land-Rover to help them with their work and to transport our estate volunteers

We would need to sell 5500 packets of jelly beans to pay to conserve the only remaining section of our historic stained glass

Nearly 700 scarves will pay to fuel our biomass boiler each year which maintains a suitable conservation environment inside the Abbey to care for our paintings, furniture and the fabric of the building.

Steph Reese, Buckland Abbey’s Retail Manager says We are thrilled with the new shop which will help us to raise even more to help us care for Buckland Abbey for ever, for everyone. We are also very excited to be holding ‘Meet the Designers’ when we will have the talented in house designers from the National Trust who will share with us their original artwork and inspiration for our beautiful  Spring/Summer collection, ‘Valleys to Headlands’ which is inspired by the slow movements of nature, from landscapes formed over millions of years to wildflowers that mark the coming of Spring. Plus we’ll have fudge, cider, sparkling wine, chutney and curd for tasting - yummy

Carol Murrin, Buckland Abbey General Manager says ”The shop here at Buckland plays a vital role in funding the important conservation work we do and the new refit will help us deliver this work for years to come. It's about revealing and sharing the significance of places and ensuring that their special qualities are protected, enhanced, understood and enjoyed by present and future generations.”

Meet the Designers sessions will be running on 24th March from 11.30 to 2.30 with guided tours of the Abbey including the chance to see Andrew Logan’s Cosmic Egg also available at 10.30am and 12 noon. General openig hours are Monday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm.
