Horrabridge Cavaliers Bottle Auction

From its small beginnings in 2004, the annual Bottle Auction run by the Horrabridge Cavaliers has become a greatly anticipated event in the village, with proceeds growing year on year. This year’s auction, organised by Cavaliers’ vice-chairman Bill Mullery, will take place in the London Inn. The auctioning begins at 7 o’ clock, with the lots available for inspection in the bar from about 6.30pm. The auction itself is guaranteed to be a lively evening in the London Inn, and the selling has to be fast and continuous to get through the number of lots on offer. The lead auctioneer, Cavaliers’ chairman John Howells, will be backed up this year by Dave Scragg and Chris Tear.

Last year’s event raised a record £1,800, bringing the total to date since the auctions started to over £14,000. It is the main fundraising event for the Cavaliers who have recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of their foundation in 1977. The success of the auctions is really thanks to the residents of Horrabridge, who have been increasingly generous with their donations of bottles over the years, and in doing so have enabled the Cavaliers to lend support to many organisations and individuals in the village.

In the week or so prior to the auction, the Cavaliers will be knocking on doors in Horrabridge to collect bottles offered by residents. If householders are out when the collectors call, they can drop their bottles off at the Horrabridge Stores and Post Office. Any bottles will be gratefully accepted – wines, beers, cider, spirits and soft drinks - provided the seals on the bottles are intact.

This year’s organiser Bill Mullery said: “We are looking forward to another good evening in the London, and we’re very grateful to landlord Mike Huda, and his team for all they do to make it a successful and enjoyable event”.
