Learning on the hoof

A group of Dartmoor Farmers have benefited from an in depth course on cattle foot care led by National expert Roger Blowey MRCVS. The event was organised by the Dartmoor Hill Farm Project and was supported by the Federation of Devon Young Farmers Clubs.

Roger Blowey has been a practising vet for over 40 years and written a number of books and papers on foot care and trimming. He emphasised the importance of understanding the causes of lameness and this formed a key part of the day, where participants looked in detail at the structure and physiology of the cattle hoof. This involved looking at a range of hoof samples and provided the context for participants prior to gaining hands on experience.

Roger said:“Lameness is a condition of cows that starts in heifers. Prevention of sole bruising is important but early intervention and effective treatment will go a long way to control lameness.”

The practical sessions were supported by Mole Valley Farmers Ltd who provided a specialist crush and attended the event to discuss foot care products and equipment. An important area covered by the course was cow comfort and operator safety which is greatly influenced by the handling system. As well as providing one to one tuition Roger also demonstrated the effective application of blocks to aid hoof recovery.

The Dartmoor Hill Farm Project provides a wide range of courses for farmers and landowners on Dartmoor. During November the focus will be on Pesticides training and digital skills. For further details or advice please call 01822 890913 or email hfp@dartmoor.gov.uk
