Sutton Trust Success for Tavistock College Student.

The programme, delivered in partnership with the US-UK Fulbright Commission, includes a one week summer school in the US (either Massachusetts Institute of Technology or Yale University) with introductory events and university application support in the UK before and after. The Sutton Trust covers all programme costs, including residential events, accommodation and travel.

The Sutton Trust manages and develops programmes to address educational inequality in the UK. The programme Rebecca applied for is open only to students from state schools from families with a low to moderate income and they must have a proven record of high

achievement and commitment to learning. To qualify for the programme Rebecca had to write 5 essays, be actively under taking a range of extra- curricular activities, and make a 5 minute video interview, covering 3 pre given questions to be presented to a selection panel. She now faces a set of examinations which she needs to pass to a high standard to enable her to be considered to study for her degree in America, and must travel to London in June to take them.

“Since the end of year 10 it has been my dream to go to a top American University. What attracts me to them is their liberal arts system which will enable me to study Computer Science plus Engineering, Japanese, History and Psychology in the early years, with my long term aim to get a job at Google, Microsoft or MI5. Being selected on the program and having the guidance of the Sutton Trust would be one step closer to my dream. My nominated school representative, Mr Crispin Chambers, will also have the help and guidance in supporting my US University applications.

Living in the UK, the only way to get a feel of a certain American University is to do their virtual tour. Now that I have been selected onto the Sutton Trust US summer school program I shall be spending a week at Yale University, living and experiencing university life, including lectures. I shall also have the opportunity of attending the University Fair at Harvard with the whole of the Sutton Trust Cohort 6 group. I am so grateful to Mrs Jones my school Principle and Tavistock College for their huge support.”

Sarah Jones, Principal at Tavistock College said “I am delighted for Rebecca. She is an outstanding student who has always set the highest standards for herself. She is an excellent role model for other students and certainly deserves this opportunity. I hope that this programme will help her reach her ambition to study at Stanford University following in the footsteps of John Steinback, John F. Kennedy and Herbert Hoover.”
