Oscar-Winning Producer to visit Plymouth Arts Centre to Celebrate International Women's Day 2018

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2018, Plymouth Arts Centre has scheduled a programme of screenings and talks with leading figures in the film industry to discuss the significant roles available to women in film.

On Thursday 8 March, a free screening for school students aged 16-19 of the award-winning film Ex Machina will take place as part of the Into Film programme celebrating women in animation. This screening will be introduced by Laurie Brugger, who has worked on the visual effects team for films such as Gravity, Guardians of the Galaxy and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Laurie will discuss her career so far, and by highlighting a wide variety of career opportunities such as VFX supervisor, Puppeteer, Producer and Director within the film industry, aims to inspire young women and men aged between to think about following their own paths into the world of film and animation.

On Tuesday 13 March, Plymouth Arts Centre are screening another stand-out film as part of their International Women’s Day programme.

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women will be introduced by Mia Bays, Oscar winning and twice BAFTA nominated creative producer, and Anna Smith, Film Editor of Time Out Magazine. Mia is the founder of Missing In Action Films, a london-based Academy Award-winning independent film production company. She also runs Birds Eye View, a charity which has been promoting the work of women filmmakers and tackling gender inequality in film since 2002.

Anna Navas, Film Programmer at Plymouth Arts Centre, says, “It’s so important to highlight the work of women in film, and the opportunities available to young and emerging filmmakers, especially in the current climate.”

Plymouth Arts Centre is committed to all aspects of inclusion both in-front the screen and behind the camera, and uses the F-Rating in its programme to support and promote women and redress the imbalance in the film industry.

Programmed alongside these screenings and talks, Peninsula Arts are also hosting a series of activities to celebrate International Women’s Day. From March 5 to March 19, audiences can enjoy screenings of key feminist films Suffragette, Daughter Rite and Daughters of the Dust; complemented by introductions from Dr Kayla Parker and Film Programmer Anna Navas.
