Producer Appointed for Plymouth City-Wide Arts Project We The People (are the work)

Five city arts organisations have appointed a Producer for an ambitious arts project to take place in Plymouth in 2017.

The Plymouth Visual Art Programming Group (PVAPG) in conjunction with curator Simon Morrissey, has selected Vickie Fear as Producer for multi-site art exhibition We The People (are the work). PVAPG is a partnership between The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art, Plymouth Arts Centre, Peninsula Arts at Plymouth University, KARST and Plymouth City Council.

Vickie Fear will be leaving her role as Plymouth Arts Centre’s Assistant Curator. She has worked at Plymouth Arts Centre since 2012, when she moved to the city from Bristol. Vickie also works as one of the organisers of Counter, the Plymouth art book fair and was chair of Visual Arts Plymouth in 2016.

Kate Sparshatt, Executive Director at Plymouth Arts Centre, says

“Plymouth Arts Centre is delighted that Vickie is moving on to this new and pivotal role in the city. The Assistant Curator position was created to be a developmental role to bring new talent to Plymouth and train curators for the future. We look forward to welcoming new talent in the new year and are pleased we will continue to work with Vickie in her freelance capacity.”

We The People (are the work) is a city-wide exhibition that will build connections between the people of Plymouth and internationally renowned artists. The city will be transformed by a series of newly commissioned temporary artworks that question our engagement with politics and identity. In the wake of recent global events, it asks what are the differences and shared experiences that shape society?

We The People (are the work) is curated by Simon Morrissey and presented by PVAPG (Plymouth Visual Art Programming Group), a partnership between KARST, Peninsula Arts at Plymouth University, Plymouth Arts Centre, Plymouth History Centre and The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art. It is part of Horizon, a two-year visual arts programme in Plymouth supported by Arts Council England's 'Ambition for Excellence’ programme.

In November 2015, Simon Morrissey was appointed as curator of the project. Simon Morrissey is a curator and the director of Foreground, a commissioning arts organisation. His curated projects have been commissioned by leading public institutions and commercial galleries including The British Council; Arnolfini, Bristol; The Bowes Museum, County Durham; Forma, Newcastle/London; Chapter, Cardiff; Spike Island, Bristol and Hauser & Wirth, Somerset.
