The Dartmoor Skincare Company

The Dartmoor Skincare Company - inspired by nature

Tara Leader has been working as a beauty therapist on Dartmoor since 2003. Three years ago she set up her own business, Tara’s Treatments, which has been fully booked for the last year. And now she has launched her own range of handmade natural skincare products…

Tara is a reflexologist as well as a beauty therapist and has always been drawn to natural therapies. Both her children suffered from eczema when they were young, and after researching the ingredients in baby care products she discovered that their skin wasn’t irritated by substances without sulphates. This was the beginning of her passion for skincare and why she has resolved that her products will never contain sulphates, parabens, synthetic colours or fragrances. She started developing her skincare range a year ago, with extensive testing and feedback from a very willing group of family, friends and clients. The result is a superb range of products that we also had the pleasure of trying! The hand and nail cream is a definite favourite as the zing of citrus it releases when you rub it in, is as much of a treat for your olfactory senses as for your hands. The cleanser and facial mist are invigoratingly refreshing while the moisturiser and body cream sink into the skin leaving a velvety feel, which lasts all day and makes you feel it really must be doing your skin good.

Tara’s skincare philosophy

The skin is extraordinarily resilient, but it absorbs up to 60% of what we put on it so products containing harsh additives can sometimes cause irritation. Natural ingredients are much kinder to the skin than their chemical alternatives and far less likely to cause reactions. All my products are made primarily from naturally derived ingredients, including cold pressed organic oils and unrefined organic butters which are less processed, so contain more vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients and fatty acids. Research shows that plants grown organically have a higher level of vital antioxidant vitamins than non-organic plants and these organic ingredients help to nourish, repair and replenish your skin. Synthetic fragrances are the most common cause of skin sensitivities so I always use natural organic essential oils. All my skincare creams are made with pure Dartmoor water, rather than purified tap water. Botanical extracts such as organic comfrey leaves and aloe vera add nutrient-rich properties to soothe and rejuvenate the skin, while extracts of soya beans and asparagus help bind moisture deep into the skin. I have also added natural vitamin E to the creams for its healing and skin-enhancing properties.

Tara’s three-step skincare routine

People often ask me the secret to good skin. It starts with regular maintenance, by which I mean you should cleanse, tone and moisturise twice a day – first thing in the morning and before going to bed.
