'Trial’ and error – Sheepdog training for the novice on Dartmoor

A rare opportunity is being offered by the Dartmoor Hill Farm Project to gain expert tuition in training novice sheepdogs. The course is being delivered by Kenny Watson, a highly respected shepherd, at his farm close to Postbridge on Dartmoor . The course commences on the 24 January and comprises six afternoon sessions, spread over a number of months, covering the main challenges faced in training both the sheepdog and the handler.

Kenny is one of three gifted brothers noted for their ability to nurture and train top quality sheepdogs. Kenny said:

“Each dog is different in character and ability and it’s up to the trainer to recognise and work with this. To get the best out of a working dog you have to be prepared to invest time on a daily basis.”

Developing and nurturing talent can be challenging, as one of the endearing characteristics of collie’s is their enthusiasm to work. Getting the balance right is important to improve working efficiency. A good herding dog should work with a calm authority and keep a good distance between itself and the sheep, without losing control of the flock. Keener dogs can cause disruption and stress, both to the sheep and the handler alike.

Kenny observed:“I often feel that successful training is less about the dog and more about the handler. It’s important that the shepherd remains calm and influences the decisions a young dog makes as it learns its trade.”

In an age of technology it’s reassuring to note that some tasks still rely on traditional practices which have stood the test of time. Perhaps none more so than the relationship between a shepherd and working dog. Many of us marvel at the sight of a collie gathering sheep on the hill. Lithe, alert and responsive these dogs thrive in an environment inaccessible to quad bikes and modern vehicles. This natural ability to gather and drive a flock is a combination of instinct and training, underpinned by a bond of trust between the handler and the dog.

The cost of the course is £100.00 (incl. VAT) with discounts for Hill Farm Project members. For further details please contact the Dartmoor Hill Farm Project office - email hfp@adrtmoor.gov.uk or phone on 01822 890913
