Now's the time to paint your house says Posh Paint of Okehampton

It’s an ideal time for doing all those painting jobs that we have all been putting off ! the weather is perfect for sprucing up the outside of our houses so I thought I would give you a few tips for the woodwork to get you going !

Make sure you have a good base to start with. Remove all flaking paint and any denatured wood. Good preparation is key to longevity of paint finish.

If the woodwork is in poor condition denatured and dry. A good base paint is Aluminium primer. This can be applied as one coat and forms a waterproof seal to allow the primer undercoat to adhere to.

It’s a common myth that any old primer will do! Sadly, a good quality top coat can be ruined by a cheap primer undercoat. Poor quality or incompatible primer undercoats can be the cause of a flaking top coat later. We are all quick to blame the top coat. A good quality primer comes as a primer and undercoat all in one so there should be no need to apply both Primers bend and flex at different rates so don’t be tempted to skimp on the base coat. Both Little Greene and Farrow & Ball supply undercoats which are tinted to a similar colour to the top coat and they are specifically designed to be compatible with your chosen top finish being it Exterior eggshell or Full Gloss. Don’t forget the 6-year guarantee on these paints only applies if you have used the whole system.

One coat of primer undercoat should be applied followed by two coats of your chosen top coat.

Temperature is vital,10 degrees C and above and ideally not too much direct sunlight. Watch the weather for frost this time of year. Frost can cause unseen fine lines in paint which can result in pockets of moisture blistering at a later date.

We are here to help so please e mail with any questions you may have through our web site www.poshpaint.com and you can post pictures on our face book page. We look forward to seeing them!
