Okehampton set to become a ‘Totally Locally’ town

Totally Locally is a campaign to encourage people to ‘shop local’, which has shown great success in many towns across the country. The concept is simple - local businesses working together to promote local businesses as a whole, in order to benefit from increased footfall in the town - and people discovering unique independents they may not have even known existed.

Chris Sands, Totally Locally founder, said: ‘Totally Locally isn’t anti-supermarket or anti-online. There is a place for all these things - it’s just highlighting how a small change in spending habits can make a huge change to Okehampton.

‘We have a choice to make the place we live that little bit better, by just diverting £5 of our weekly spend back into our local economy. And everyone wants their town to be great, don’t they?’

Okehampton’s first Totally Locally event ahead of the full launch was June’s ‘Fiver Fest’ when for two weeks, a number of local participating businesses put on special offers for £5 to encourage people into the town, give them a bargain and get to know the friendly faces running local businesses.

If every adult in Okehampton was to spend just £5 a week extra in a local business, it would mean an extra £1.9million to the local economy each year, supporting local jobs and suppliers while often getting a friendly service you just don’t find elsewhere.
