Walks with Angus and Sennen Pound Corner to Berrator – 2 hours (easy)

by

Our writers, Nichola and Rosemary, often meet up for a walk and their dogs Sennen and Angus have agreed to be the new dog guides for Moor Links, taking over from our lovely Piggy who has now retired.

The first walk they have chosen is one of their favourite walks along Roborough Down; this is a very versatile walk where you could start at various points along the route and do smaller sections or you can complete the whole walk as described here. The area is criss-crossed with numerous paths so you may sometimes not find the path described but as long as you walk in the direction indicated on the map most of the paths join up.

The route will probably take about 2 hours - the terrain is even with only a couple of moderate ascents.

(1) Park at Pound Corner at the junction of the roads to Horrabridge (joining A386), Crapstone and the Long Ash Garden Centre. Set off from the car park on the path heading downhill towards Horrabridge and then head left (you should pass a stone-sided memorial seat). Follow this path along keeping just above the line of the trees and the houses below on the right.

(2) At the point where the path meets a track on the right (coming up from The Old Station in Horrabridge), continue on the path close to the wall on your right. When the valley starts to descend away to the right below the viaduct you need to cut across to the top of the other side of the valley and then follow the track straight on keeping to the right hand side of the open area on the top. Follow this path, keeping above the main wooded area on the right.

(3) The path bends round to the left and gradually descends to meet a tarmacked track.

(4) Turn right down the tarmacked track for about 50 paces and then take a path on the left which gradually ascends through trees.

(5) At the edge of the wooded area the path continues along the top with stunning views on the right over to Walreddon.

(6) You will come to a small car park at the top of the road leading up from Coppicetown Farm (the road continues as a track down to Double Waters). Continue straight on towards Berrator. The path then bends around to the right in a large loop inside the line of the trees so that you are now walking back in the direction of Pound. Cross the track (which leads down to Double Waters) and continue to ascend until the path crosses your earlier route as you reach the woods at (5). At this point take the higher small path up through the woods keeping quite close to the wall on the right. Continue straight on until you reach the tarmacked track again.

(7) Turn right up the track until you reach the car park and then go left through the car park and follow the path close to the wall on the right.

(8) Just after the water trough the wall enclosing the fields goes round to the right. If you fancy a well-earned rest at this point turn right and visit the Long Ash garden centre and cafe. Otherwise continue straight ahead and follow the path back to the car park at Pound Corner.
