ROYAL WILLIAM YARD SETS THE SCENE FOR SENSATIONAL SUMMER

From seasonal favourites back by popular demand to new activities waiting to be discovered, a what’s on guide for upcoming events at this summer’s must-visit destination.

From taking the plunge with an open water swimming session, to witnessing daredevil circus acts and sampling the region’s finest food and drink, the summer scene at Royal William Yard is packed with an array of extraordinary events. With something new to discover and experience on every visit to suit all ages, the Yard is set to host the ultimate summer season.

Devoted foodies and artisan fans can look forward to the first Sunday of every month, with the return of the Good Food and Craft Market. Populating the green with handmade wares and fresh, local produce, visitors can wander the market, meet the passionate traders and makers, and sample a taste of the summer. This August sees some extra special family fun and energetic activities on offer, from zorbing to den building.

For families seeking entertainment, get ready to meet the Yard’s resident Squid. Returning from the deep blue by popular demand, children are invited to listen to the lively sounds of the Yard travel through the giant sea creature. To receive a pirate’s bounty, take part in The Squid Trail to track down the Squid’s deep-sea friends who have hidden themselves throughout the Yard.

Take part in even more creature-themed, family fun with Elmer’s Parade and Trail. Embark on a journey to find all three colourful Elmers that have made the Yard their home. Marching until the 16th September in aid of St Luke’s Hospice, witness the unique designs of all 40 elephants by taking a walk along the City’s trail.

It’s all about embracing the outdoors this summer; another scenic stroll comes courtesy of the ever-popular South West Coastal Path. With routes to suit different abilities, everyone can breathe in the fresh sea air and admire the tranquil location. For those that want to dive in a little deeper, experience the joy of an open water swim with Ace Swimming or take to the water with South West SUP’s paddle boarding sessions for a tour of the vibrant marina.

For an activity that’s more turf than surf, join in with Yard Yoga by Ashtanga Yoga Plymouth. Available every Thursday at 6:30pm and every Saturday at 10:15am, this dynamic and energetic yoga uses flowing sequences and breathing techniques to achieve a strong body and a calm mind.

To further soothe the soul, live music lovers are invited to soak-up the tunes by attending the popular Yard Sessions. Taking place from 5:00pm at Firestone Bay every Friday throughout the summer, take some time out to relax and listen to an eclectic mix of performances, with delicious street food and fine refreshment on-hand.

As we head later into the summer, visitors can look forward to the long-awaited return of the Weekend of Wonders. A dazzling two-day event with the wow-factor, crowds can experience family-friendly entertainment from 31st August – 1st September courtesy of world-famous performance troupe, The Invisible Circus. The free event boasts daredevil acts, tight-wire walking, balloon modelling and much more. Plus, with plenty of activities for all ages as well as a weekend long Good Food and Craft Market, visitors are guaranteed to be treated to a jaw-dropping day out.

Join the Yard for an evening of wonder, with the welcome return of the Open Air Cinema on the Green. Taking place from the 12th – 14thSeptember, film fans can take their pick from one of the year’s biggest blockbusters Captain Marvel, musical classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show or the ultimate hand clapping, foot stomping, celebration of rock legends Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody – pull up a deck chair and prepare for the ultimate outdoor theatre experience.

Make the most of the Yard’s scenic setting by taking part in Cook Your Catch on the 14th September, where you’ll join Plymouth Boat Trips and Le Vignoble for a seafood dining experience with a twist. Set sail to fish from plentiful local waters then let the expert chefs cook your catch, straight off the boat. Paired with locally sourced salads and fine wine, spend the evening enjoying the spoils of your labour whilst taking in the Yard’s unique atmosphere and picturesque marina.

There’s also no better way to take in the stunning coastal landscape then by hopping on a ferry from the Yard’s marina. Linking the Yard to the Barbican and Mount Edgcumbe, and running throughout the day, the whole family can set sail this summer.

Yard resident, Ocean Studios also has a packed events calendar offering plenty of ways to get creative this summer. With activities open to all ages and abilities, the array of craft workshops are set to include everything from light painting to screen printing, visitors can also discover a range of exhibitions – there’s plenty to get those creative juices flowing.

3rd – 4th August: High 5 Activity Weekend

Bounce your way into the weekend on Saturday 3rd August, by having a go at a range of zorbing activities, from duels and rolling races to the hilarious bubble football - thrill seekers can also take a ride down the 20m inflatable outdoor Slip ‘n Slide!

Cost: £3. Visit on the day to book a session. 

On Sunday 4th August, visitors are invited to join High 5’s Wild Tribe Family sessions to experience life as a survivalist. Under the guidance of experts, families can learn how to build a shelter, as well as the art of fire lighting. Once mastered, you can also have a go at cooking (and eating – if you choose!) a selection of insects, including meal worms and crickets. Other, more traditional open fire treats will also be available, including hot chocolate and marshmallows on homemade skewers.

4th August: Good Food and Craft Market

With plenty on offer throughout the day, enjoy the region’s finest wares, food and drink alongside a range of family-fun activities, including outdoor lawn games, pop-up table tennis activities from Ping! Plymouth, creative crafts and face painting.
