Tavistock Rotary Round up

Ossie Palmer

As autumn turns into winter, we can reflect on a superb couple of months for Tavistock Rotary. In the extended warm weather, we held a couple of really fun social events. Our annual croquet match against the Yelverton Rotarians, as always, was a good laugh. Not many people really knew what they were doing and no-one has any idea who won, but that doesn’t matter - it’s about having fun, a couple of drinks and pasties. We also enjoyed lots of traditional games – swingball, darts, table tennis and horseshoe tossing – as well as excellent food, when Christine and Robin Wilson hosted our annual Bring and Braai (South African for ‘barbecue’), in honour of our recent president, Catherine Bailey.

We were out in force marshalling the car park at Widecombe Fair. We never get to see much of the fair but it’s always a good day helping hundreds of friendly people. We were also proud to help steward the Junior Life Skills event at Tavistock Town Hall, where it was truly wonderful to see so many children learning how to be safe on the moors, in the home, online and in a host of other situations.

But the highlight of the past couple of months has been Goose Fair. Our bookstall, ‘this and that’ stall and ‘guess the weight of the geese competition’ were extremely popular and helped us to raise a significant amount of money for our local charities. Nigel Ellis, our community team leader was delighted to thank everyone who supported our stalls and to announce that Mary Bradford from Lamerton had guessed the weight of the geese exactly, at 27lb 12oz.

Our President, Norrie Philip, has selected Tavistock Triangle Centre as our charity for the year and, on October 12th, we were really pleased to be able to present the centre with a cheque for £1200 at their coffee morning in the Parish Rooms.

We’re now building up to Dickensian Evening, helping Santa visit as many places as possible in Tavistock, and the Christmas Day Lunch at the United Reformed Church – we’re looking forward to seeing as many people as possible at these events.
