How and when did the business start?
Dartmoor Photographic was started in 1986, in North Street, by Kathie Hall and later the business moved to Duke Street; sadly, Kathie passed away in 1997 which was when her son Keith took over the business. In 2000 we moved to our present site in Brook Street, and later increased the size of the shop to keep pace with our growing business.
What has changed/developed in your work over the years?
When we started, we were sending our films to be developed; then we invested in a one-hour developing and printing machine and have since always invested in the latest technology. After the introduction of digital photography, we saw a reduction in 35mm films, although once again this is now steadily increasing; so, for now we are back to sending them away for processing once more.
What training and qualifications do you need?
Much of our work is based on knowledge and experience of working in the photographic industry for almost 40 years; our training is done in house. Some of our employees have grown up with the newer technology, but need to be trained in the more traditional aspects of our business.
What products and services do you offer customers?
Photographic printing; film processing; video and film transfers; scanning from photographs, negatives and slides; restoration of old photographs; printed personalised items and clothing; and of course, sales of photographic and optical equipment such as digital cameras, instant cameras, film, binoculars, spotting scopes, tripods and photo albums, along with a huge range of picture frames and mounts, all backed up with our expert knowledge.
How do you simplify the process for customers?
Customers can order products and services from home via our website; or if they prefer, come into store for our friendly help and advice. We are always happy to help customers!
Have you ever worked on any unusual or challenging projects?
Keith began his career in photography by travelling the world as an official photographer on cruise ships: taking, developing and printing photographs in an on-board darkroom!
What is the best thing about your job?
Our customers! Many have been coming to us for years; now we find their children are also our customers. We really appreciate the support we receive from the local community.
