Dancewest devon
Tara McEvoy, Branch Manager at Dancewest Devon, shares how the company made its way to Devon and her favourite things about teaching young people to dance.
What is Dancewest Devon?
Dancewest was started in Scotland in 2008 and we now have branches throughout the UK. Our classes in Kingsbridge and Plymouth are all about creating a nurturing environment for children to learn to dance, build self-esteem and make new friends. Dance allows young people to explore their creative side and develop life skills such as team work as well as balance, co-ordination and strength. This hobby increases activity and fitness, which allows young people to develop healthy habits and encourages healthy choices.
What do your classes offer?
We create a safe space for young people to be unapologetically themselves and love to be part of their dance journey. Dance fosters social co-operation and we hope to be a part of the local community. The opportunities to get involved in workshops, exams and performances will build core memories for our dancers and create a strong dance community. Everyone is welcome at our inclusive classes and everyone is allowed their moment to shine!
Do you have a favourite type of dance?
Each style of dance is totally different. I grew up learning Ballet, Tap, Commercial and Lyrical. However, my absolute favourite is Jazz. I love how diverse it is. You can be expressive through a quirky musical dance and feel like you are on the stage at a West End production. I particularly enjoy doing this kind of dance in a big group of people. The energy levels of the dance number are fantastic to be a part of.
What’s the best thing about teaching young children to dance?
I love growing their confidence by using exciting stories and themes for each of my dance classes. A lot of children are very nervous when they first join; they quickly realise that the only thing they have to worry about is having fun! I enjoy building caring bonds with each individual and getting to know them through a shared love of dancing.
Do you have a favourite memory from your classes?
As a student myself, my favourite memories of dance classes were preparing for shows. I loved the costumes, the make-up and the excitement. As a teacher, when I have a young new pupil, they spend most of their first class pretty much stuck to me. My favourite part is when they realise they can’t resist joining in!
