For the past five years the concept of Cafés for those in grief or dealing with the death of a loved one has been growing across the UK. From Bolton to Chelmsford and Bridgend to Plymouth, groups have been setting up under various names, such as Compassionate Cafés, Bereavement Cafés, and Good Grief Cafés. The hospice movement has often been a pioneer in starting them up, or advising and helping those who see a need in their local area for such a service.
Now, Tavistock Methodist Church has its own Care Café for those who are bereaved, living with a life-limiting illness, or caring for someone who is terminally ill. We offer tea, coffee, care and a listening ear - and home-made cake. There is no charge and we meet in the church every second and fourth Tuesday morning of the month. The Café (in the lower hall of the church) is conveniently situated next to Tavistock bus station, and has wheelchair access and no stairs; assistance dogs are welcome.
Our volunteers come from lots of backgrounds, those with faith and no faith, and their own experience of grief. If you feel you need someone to talk to in confidence, we will provide support and company - or just come for a friendly chat, or to play Scrabble - we can offer some fierce competition!
