The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical is all set to open its doors at Plymouth’s Theatre Royal on Saturday 6 July. It will delight local audiences for a full six weeks before hitting London’s West End in October.
Director and Choreographer Jerry Mitchell is all set to steer this brand-new reimagined production to new heights following a developmental run in Chicago in 2022. He enthused: “We’re psyched, hot and ready to go! The people you are working with always make it the most exciting; rehearsals are going great!”
Book Writer Kate Wetherhead has risen to the challenge of taking this incredible story from the screen to the musical stage: “It’s a unique challenge to adapt a movie into a musical. There are two main things to achieve: to preserve and uplift the key moments that we all know and love and to map the story onto a musical theatre structure. The stakes are high and the emotions are big – you sing when you can’t talk any more!” The music is set to be fabulous, with the show featuring an original score by music icon and Olivier and Tony Award winner, Elton John
The set and costumes will no doubt be awe-inspiring as the audience enters the world of Runway and high-fashion. There is a new outfit for every new day on stage and an epic five fashion shows, each grander than the last and taking us from a ‘ready to wear’ collection through to the dizzy heights of James Holt’s fashion show towards the end of the show. And of course, there’s Paris…
Vanessa Williams, playing Miranda, explained: "You have to remember that the show is set in 2005, which is why it works so well... For me, Miranda's strength and tolerance make Andy a better person and Emily a stronger person; what I love about bringing Miranda to life is that she ultimately makes people better. I'm going to bring what I have to this character – sometimes she may be a little more sassy [than in the film]!"
This was echoed by Amy Di Bartolomeo (Emily) and Georgie Buckland (Andy). Discussing the role of Andy, Georgie said: "She's very much my own and I hope you like her as much as I do!" Amy added: "We are making it our own – this is our musical version!"
The show is set to be full of colour, fun and sharp humour, but there are lessons to learn and take away. Matt Henry, playing Runway's Creative Director, Nigel, explained: "The show has a serious message, but it has huge heart. The things we want don't always come true, but another door always opens. As my Mum always said, nothing happens before it's time."
