December 5
Okehampton Edwardian Evening
Make a date for this year’s Edwardian Evening in Okehampton, which this year falls on December 5th.
The late night shopping extravaganza draws thousands of people into the town for a night filled with festive fun and a party-like atmosphere. This year’s big night is being organised by Everything Okehampton - you will notice a few changes, which it is hoped everyone will enjoy.
At 6pm the ‘Curfew Bell’ will toll and Matt Woodley of BBC Radio Devon will perform an official switch-on of the town's Christmas Lights.
Jack Frost (aka Rob Pudner of Entertainingly Different) will be entertaining the crowds for 30 minutes from 6.15pm and again at 7.15pm and 8.15pm - make sure you catch this larger-than-life character around town.
The traditional barrel organ will be playing to add to the festive atmosphere, plus the Mayor's Carol Service will take place outside St James’ Church, lead by the town's Excelsior Silver Band. A variety of food and drinks vendors will be in Fore Street, where you can sample tempting Christmas delights and there will be the opportunity buy some lovely Christmas presents for friends and family from a range of stall holders.
Anita Frost, the author of the Green Bean and Friends children’s books, will be hosting two story telling sessions outside The Toy Shop - bring your little ones along to enjoy this magical experience.
Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without reindeer and these lovely beasts will be returning to Red Lion Yard for people to visit and Father Christmas will be visiting the Museum of Dartmoor Life to welcome children into his grotto.
The Victorian Arcade is planning their own special events for Edwardian Evening - make sure you check out what’s going on in this unique shopping area.
Musical entertainment will also be supplied by the Okehampton College Big Band which will be performing in the Charter Hall - they will also be running a special festive hamper draw.
Jade and Christine of Everything Okehampton hope you will visit for this special evening and check out the diverse range of local traders and goods which are on offer.
There will be a programme of events on the Everything Okehampton notice board outside Donald's Menswear and in the window of the Toy Shop in Red Lion Yard.
Parking is free in Simmons Park car park after 3pm throughout December - the high street through Okehampton will be closed to traffic between 5.30pm and 9pm.
