Sabine Baring Gould - Influencer
The Edge are pleased to announce an exciting new play to be performed during the celebrations of the life, and centenary of the death, of Sabine Baring Gould, the Squarson of Lewtrenchard. The play ‘Sabine Baring Gould - Influencer’ looks at his influence on contemporary authors as well as his life at Lewtrenchard, seen from the view of two of his daughters; this takes place both in earlier family years and towards the end of his life. SBG, as we have come to know him, was an author with over 1200 publications, an archaeologist - his first dig was published in The Illustrated London News when he was just 16, a collector of traditional songs especially in Devon and Cornwall, and a devotee of folk tales from all around. After Cambridge University, he started as a teacher and then a curate, becoming a vicar in Kent at the request of Prime Minister Gladstone. He ended up as the squire and parson at Lew and St Peter’s church, the family’s home for generations - a real polymath! The play will follow the pattern of The Edge’s previous productions, performed between courses of a splendid meal at The Bedford Hotel both on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 April. The cost is £35 for a 3-course dinner and the play – tickets are available at bedford-hotel.co.uk. There will also be a slideshow exhibition in the foyer of related work by Tavistock Photographic Society. Many other events are taking place during the year both in Tavistock and Lewtrenchard – see sbgcentenary.co.uk and Link Magazines for details.
