Open every day, winter is a very special season at Stone Lane Gardens. Our beautiful National Collection of birch and alder comes into its own when lit by clear winter light, with shining vistas throughout the arboretum of birch bark rich in colours of gold, silver, copper and bronze.
On high ground, Dartmoor’s springs, full of water at this time of year, trickle steadily into the glittering streams filling up the water garden’s ponds.
Sprinkled amongst the trees in January our ever-increasing display of snowdrops, begun some years ago with donations from supporters and Friends of the Gardens, forms a flower strewn carpet just as though it had freshly snowed.
In our meadows, full of wildflowers in early summer, on winter mornings the soft grasses are laden with sparkling frost before the sun gives a little warmth to the earth. With amazing winter views across the width of high Dartmoor where tors are often sprinkled with snow, the meadows and the Gardens welcome visitors every day year round from 10am till dusk.
