I would like to talk to you about a new fitness venture called Phoenix Group Exercise. I know what you’re thinking - not another super gym - another fitness facility in a town that already has several. Well, this fitness experience is quite unlike anything else and is already developing quite a following! So, before you stop reading because you’re thinking “the gym scene just isn’t for me”, for whatever reason that might be, please hear me out.
Phoenix Group Exercise is exactly that. Group workout sessions that range from high energy group cycle classes on quality spin bikes, to low impact Pilates classes suitable for all. But it’s not the classes alone that make this gym studio stand out. It’s the extraordinary lady who has put them together and provides such amazing help and support. Keri has over 20 years’ experience in the fitness industry as a personal trainer and fitness coach, and she had a vision to make it much more accessible to everyone. She is the kindest soul you will ever meet and offers the utmost encouragement and dedication to whoever walks through the door. But that’s not where it ends!
Keri has already developed Neuro Ninjas; a programme designed specifically for people living with Parkinson’s, or similar neurological conditions. The session was designed with the help of local people with experience of the condition or living with its effects, and it combines physical exercise, games to provide mental challenge, and mobility aiding stretches. Keri is now looking to create highly individualised sensory sessions for people with specific sensory needs, so they can fully benefit from a group class – whether they are on the autistic spectrum, challenged by ADHD, or managing Tourette’s. She is also planning safe sessions for young people who are unsure of their gender or sexual identity, providing somewhere to work out, where they can feel comfortable and be themselves.
Keri includes classes that parents with children can enjoy together, and ensures that as many classes as possible are given daytime and evening slots to suit everyone’s work and life commitments. She feels everyone should have an equal opportunity to enjoy the freedom of a workout and join a community, without feeling embarrassment or being in competition with others. With such a following already growing, she is now looking at re-designing her timetable to include even more classes. But it’s not all just about fitness. It’s about mental health. It’s about finding like-minded people. It’s about men and women supporting each other. There’s a real camaraderie in her classes and I for one have benefitted no end from her expertise, understanding, and support.
