Welcome to one of the finest gardens in Britain
Nestled on the edge of Dartmoor, The Garden House is a gardener’s delight. The 10 acre garden has evolved over 70 years. It includes great drifts of cottage garden favourites, terraces, formal long borders, a quarry garden and inspiring planting design everywhere you look.
Experienced gardeners will appreciate the way the gardens are designed to capture borrowed vistas and to open up new views around each corner. New gardeners will see unusual varieties and be inspired by the skills of generations of gardeners before them.
Our tea rooms are in the house, with light airy rooms overlooking the garden and opening onto the lawn. Enjoy generous portions of homemade cake and light lunches looking over the garden and onto Dartmoor. we’re licenced too, offering wine and local beers.
The garden is open from around Easter time until the end of October. In the winter the garden is full of snowdrops and our special winter opening days are well-known to gardeners who love winter walks and snowy scenes.
Video - The Garden House, Devon. High Summer, 2016
On a wonderfully sunny, late summer afternoon, Kernow Drones came to The Garden House to film the garden from an entirely new angle. They worked for over hours, to create a video just three minutes long that captures the magical feel of this extraordinary garden.
The drone swooped through small gateways and climbed high above the tree-tops, capturing views that show the clever design and perfect setting of this Dartmoor garden.
The video will be shown in The Garden House interpretation room, where it will give visitors the opportunity to relate to the garden in new ways. It is an exciting new way to enjoy the garden and get an understanding of how the 10 acres are laid out in various garden rooms.
Accessibility
Our paths are a mixture of broad, relatively level pathways and narrow, undulating pathways through meadows and between trees. The broader paths are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs and new paths have been laid so that even more of the garden is accessible to visitors who are seated.
Many people visit to view our long borders in the walled garden, which is accessible to everyone along the main path. Visitors who are less mobile can enjoy the views up the terraces to the house. The terraces themselves involve steps and narrow pathways and are best left for people who are confident on their feet.
Our 2 acre arboretum has been designed with wheeled access in mind, and is suitable for all.
