A day to improve skills, practice techniques and learn from an encouraging, accomplished tutor. Improvers, beginners and those who haven’t picked up a brush for a long time are all welcome.
Paint along with Richard Mabey as he demonstrates a step-by-step approach to creating a series of loose and lively watercolour paintings. Focus on form, tonal values and colour schemes using Richard’s well prepared materials that will save time and enable you to focus on your painting rather than preparation work. This class introduces ink pen and watercolour wash, a combination that adds an extra, exciting dimension to watercolour paintings.
Learn how to draw with pen and ink, using Richard’s speciality split hazel and matchstick pens, or bring your own. Discover pen and ink techniques that will enhance your painting and give you skills that you will be able to apply to future painting projects. You’ll learn how to combine watercolour washes over pen and ink drawings to great effect.
You will spend the day working in the Fortescue Room. This is a pleasant room in which to paint and has a lovely garden aspect. Individual guidance and encouragement will be offered throughout the day.
Water jars, blocks and boards to support pad or paper will be provided. You’ll need to bring whatever equipment you are familiar with, including 2B pencil, colours, preferably in tubes, brushes and paper. A white plastic palette with small areas to squeeze out tube colours together with some good size mixing wells is essential as you will be painting fast and loose! Brush Sizes 3 (Rigger or Medium Sword Liner) and 8 and 16 (round) are recommended. For the line and wash class bring some waterproof ink and a steel nib pen or Pilot drawing pen size 0.2 or 0.5 (Pilot DR, Edding, Profipen or similar). Watercolour paper or pads of 140lb/300gsm will be most practical as it is heavy/thick enough not to require stretching. A rough surface paper is preferable.
Colours you’ll be using include Light Red, Raw Sienna, Winsor Yellow, Winsor Red, Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna, Winsor Blue (Red Shade), Brown Madder.
